If you buy her this toy, she'll play with it at YOUR house

I was looking at baby toys in Penney's yesterday and saw a really cute butterfly. Everything about it was cute until I picked it up and realized its wings had that awful crinkly sounding paper in them. You know the sound--like the person behind you opening a candy wrapper really slowly in church. I CANNOT STAND THAT SOUND. I immediately put the butterfly back and moved on to another display of toys. MORE crinkle sounds. People, I will let you know now, that if a toy like that should make its way to our house, it will make its way to the back of the closet or to the nursery at church, or to Granny's or Yaya's or BACK to your house.

I don't know why I'm so sensitive to certain sounds. Even right now Geron is playing with a popsicle wrapper or some type of plastic wrap in the living room and it is driving me INSANE. Trips to the grocery store bring this irritation often--grabbing a bag of cookies off the shelf, hearing someone a foot a way holding a bag of chips and squeezing it as they read the fat grams or whatever off the back, etc.

Just know, its not in the baby's best interest to buy her a toy like this. Rattles, dolls, musical toys are fine--well, I'm sure they won't always be, but they will ALWAYS be better than a crinkle toy. Thanks for being a peace maker.

I've seen those butterflys, too, and i'm glad i'm not the only one who thinks they're annoying. they're pretty, though. i'm like you with certain sounds, lydia. for me, i can't stand to take something out of a freezer and hear that ice scraping sound. it even makes eating ice cream less fun. i remember when i was little i used to hate the sound of a rake on a sidewalk. so i guess for me it's mostly scraping sounds, and not so much crinkly sounds. but yeah, that butterfly annoys me, too.

i won't get in to the most annoying sound in the world to me, because it's just too gross to talk about.

but, note to self: no crinkle sounds around sweet sister. i'll try to remember that one.

Aversion of the crinkle sounds means a good deal of 0-6 months toys are out.

Do you folks know how annoying it can be sometimes to live with a crazy person.

"that pen writing on paper sounds annoying"

"This blanket feels almost as bad as a barbed-wire fence"

Life is always an adventure with lydia

Lydia has always been sensitive to textures. If I had her now, instead of so many years ago, I would probably say she is an "Out-of-sync" child. There actually is a syndrome that describes her to a tee. When she was little, she didn't like the way zippers felt and wouldn't wear dresses with zippers in the back. Mom made her a Christmas dress and put snaps in it. And let's talk about foods--some things just didn't feel right in her mouth, so she wouldn't eat them. She's improved a lot since then.

I refuse to eat bananas, not because of the taste, but because of the texture.

When Jamie was a baby (and even now) he couldn't wear certain things because the texture of the fabric drove him so nuts he'd cry all the time.

But Geron, one thing to remember, pregnancy hormones amplify certain annoyances to the point where they drive a pregnant woman nuts. Be patient with her, there's only a little more than 2 months to go!

It took me until recently to wear a turtleneck. As I kid, I was convinced one would choke me to death.

Ann, email me too! I have to know.

All readers should know I made neither the pen nor the blanket comment. My husband just likes to amuse you.

BUT, he did say something about the sound of the keys clicking on the keyboard after I mentioned his wrapper or whatever.

Oh, and as for picky textures, still there. I love bananas now, but grapes--if they're not cut up in chicken salad, its like biting into an eyeball. GOO!
